Configure Your Barcode and Label Printer

Dymo Printers

Printing barcodes with a Dymo printer is incredibly simple.

The recommended label size for best quality is 1 1/8” X 3 1/2” or larger.

When you’re ready to print, simply select the Dymo printer from your print menu and click "Print."

Zebra Printers

The instructions to print barcodes with the Zebra printer will vary between Windows and Mac. We'll outline instructions for both.

Please note that these methods do not support the cutter attachment on Zebra printers.

Before you get started, confirm that your labels are loaded correctly into the machine.

Zebra Windows Setup

  2. Download Zebra Setup UtilitiesDo not change the settings on the printer itself. Zebra Setup Utilities is not currently available on Mac. If using a Mac, click here. When you've completed those steps, return to this page and skip ahead to the steps for printing!

    • CUPS is the interface you will use to add your Zebra printer and select a driver. To access CUPS, copy and paste the following address into your web browser: http://localhost:631
    • If you have never accessed CUPS through Chrome, you will get the message: "Web Interface is Disabled". If this happens, select the magnifying glass icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen and enter, "Terminal" into the search bar that appears.
  3. Open Terminal, then paste this text cupsctl WebInterface=yes , and press Enter. There will be no notification but the next step will let us know if this is completed.
  4. Now refresh your browser on http://localhost:631, you will now see the CUPS web interface main page.

Troubleshooting the Zebra Printer

Barcodes not printing according to the barcode settings in CommentSold

  1. Open the "Paper Size" drop-down in the Chrome print dialogue menu.
  2. Set the size to one with a 1:1 aspect ratio, such as "3.00 x 3.00."

Once you set the size to the same width and height, it should start printing the size you have set within CommentSold.

Error “No Printer Found”

  1. Confirm PDF Barcodes are enabled under Setup > Barcodes in CommentSold.
  2. Confirm the printer shows in the Print dialogue menu.

Error “Media Out”

  1. The media is not loaded or is loaded incorrectly. Load labels correctly according to the manufacturer.
  2. Misaligned media sensor. Check the position of the media sensor.
  3. The printer is set for non-continuous media, but continuous media is loaded. Install the proper media type, or reset the printer for the current media type.
    • Continuous Media comes in a plain roll without any separation or gap.

Barcodes are printing too light, blurry, or faded on the Zebra printer

  1. Dirty Printhead. Contamination can cover the elements, preventing heat transfer.
    • Open the Printhead by moving the Printhead Lever to the OPEN position.
    • Remove the media and ribbon (if present).
    • Use a cleaning swab (99.7% isopropyl alcohol) and wipe the print elements from end to end. (The print elements are the greyish/ black strip just behind the chrome strip on the underside of the Printhead.) Allow a few seconds for the solvent to evaporate.
    • Rotate the Platen Roller and clean thoroughly with a cleaning swab.
    • Brush or vacuum any accumulated paper lint and dust away from the Rollers, the Media, and the Ribbon Sensors.
    • Reload ribbon and/ or media, close and latch the Printhead, restore power
  2. Burn Temp too low
    • On the printer, open the Settings menu and press the right arrow. Darkness should be the first setting.
    • Set the darkness to the lowest setting that provides good print quality. If it’s still printing too light, adjust the setting one notch higher.
  3. The printhead pressure is not right
    • There are two printhead pressure adjustment dials on the printer.
    • For adjustment, you can turn counterclockwise to increase the pressure and turn clockwise to lower the printhead pressure.
  4. Print speed is too high.
    • The Print Speed can be adjusted through the LCD Display on the printer.

Barcodes are printed in the wrong direction

  • Check the settings on the Chrome Print window. Many times, the Chrome settings will overwrite the ones on the default printer, so those are the ones we want to work with most.
  • Margins should be set to none or minimum, and the paper size needs to be set to the size of the label you are printing. You may need to convert these from mm to inches.
  • The scale can be adjusted if the label is being printed onto multiple labels instead of fitting onto a single one normally. For Dymo, this usually means putting it at 60%.
  • Check the Layout (Orientation). Generally Shipping labels will be printing Portrait, and the barcodes will print in landscape. This will need to be changed when changing what you are printing.
  • Make sure that the preview looks correct. The preview is the best indicator of what the page is going to look like when it prints. If the preview does not match what is coming out of the printer, confirm there are no duplicate printers.

Barcodes won’t print

  1. Make sure PDF Barcodes are enabled in CommentSold under Setup>Barcodes.
  2. Confirm and install any software updates for your printer, and then restart your computer.

Printing offset or misaligned

Recalibrate the printer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Printer in an error state or is freezing/hanging

  1. Restart the printer or disconnect and reconnect the printer from its power source.
  2. Open the print queue in your computer and clear pending print jobs.
