Stripe Tax helps you manage sales tax settings, product tax codes, and tax registrations in CommentSold. You can complete a guided Stripe Tax setup and review your tax configuration from Setup > Taxes > Stripe Tax.
| Important: Completing Stripe Tax setup does not change how your orders are taxed immediately. Until the Stripe Tax cutover, Avalara continues to calculate your shop's taxes as it does today. |

What is Stripe Tax?
Stripe Tax is the sales-tax solution that will replace Avalara for CommentSold shops.
Before the transition, you can use the Stripe Tax onboarding flow to review and confirm your:
- Tax settings
- Product tax codes
- Tax registrations
- Tax-related configuration
The Stripe Tax configuration remains inactive for tax calculation until the Stripe Tax cutover.
Before You Start
Make sure your shop:
- Has a connected Stripe or CS Payments account.
- Has access to Stripe Tax.
- Is ready to review its product tax codes and tax registrations.
| Note: Shops using legacy tax settings may see a shorter onboarding flow because there are no existing Avalara settings to migrate. |
Complete Stripe Tax Setup
- Select Setup from the side menu of your CommentSold dashboard.
- Select Taxes from the options listed at the top.
- Select Get started to open the guided onboarding flow. The onboarding flow walks you through these steps:
- Introduction — Learn about the Stripe Tax transition.
- Tax scope — Review the tax configuration that applies to your shop.
- Default settings — Review your default tax settings.
- Product tax codes — Review and confirm tax codes assigned to your products.
- Registrations — Review your tax registrations.
- Summary — Review your selections.
- Once completed, select Finish Setup.
You can resume the setup later if you leave before completing all the steps.
Review Product Tax Codes
During onboarding, CommentSold may recommend tax codes for your products based on the available product information.
Recommendations are handled based on confidence:
| Match confidence | What happens |
| High | The tax code is applied automatically. |
| Medium or Low | A tax code is selected for you to review and confirm. |
| Unrecognized | You're asked to select a tax code. The default selection is General - Tangible Goods. |
Review the suggested tax codes carefully and make any necessary changes before completing onboarding.
| Note: New products can also receive a Stripe tax code automatically based on your shop's saved mappings, product information, and default tax code. |
Manage Stripe Tax After Onboarding
After you complete onboarding, go to Setup > Taxes > Stripe Tax
The Stripe Tax tab includes tools for managing and reviewing your tax configuration.
You can:
- Review your Stripe Tax settings.
- Review your tax registrations.
- View product tax codes.
- Monitor sales-tax thresholds.
- Export tax transactions.
- See when registrations were last confirmed and who confirmed them.
Update Product Tax Codes
You can update a product's Stripe tax code from its product edit page.
For multiple products, you can use the bulk actions available in the product grid.
| Note: After onboarding, tax codes are applied to your product catalog in the background. Large catalogs may take some time to finish processing. |
Understand the Stripe Tax Transition
Stripe Tax is introduced in phases.
Before the Stripe Tax cutover
- Avalara continues to calculate your shop's taxes.
- Your Stripe Tax configuration is prepared but does not affect order tax calculation.
- The Stripe Tax tab becomes available after you complete onboarding.
After the Stripe Tax cutover
- Stripe Tax becomes the tax engine used to calculate taxes.
- The Stripe Tax tab becomes the primary tax-management area.
- The Avalara tab is no longer available.
| Important: The Stripe Tax onboarding date and the tax-calculation cutover are separate events. Completing onboarding early does not cause your shop to switch to Stripe Tax immediately. |
Monitor Tax Thresholds
- The Stripe Tax tab includes threshold monitoring to help you understand your potential sales-tax obligations.
- Threshold monitoring reflects sales through CommentSold only. It does not include sales your business makes through other sales channels.
- If you sell through multiple channels, consider your sales across all channels when determining your tax obligations.
Manage Tax Registrations
You can review your tax registrations from the Stripe Tax tab.
| Important: Tax registrations created in Stripe cannot be deleted. They can only expire. |
Review your registration information carefully before confirming it.
Important Limitations
Keep the following in mind when using Stripe Tax:
- Onboarding does not immediately change tax calculation. Avalara continues calculating taxes until the Stripe Tax cutover.
- Threshold monitoring only includes CommentSold sales. Sales from other channels are not included.
- Stripe tax registrations cannot be deleted after they're created. They can only expire.
- Your default tax code may become outdated in CommentSold if you change the default tax code directly in Stripe.
- Product tax-code updates happen in the background. Large catalogs may take time to finish processing.
FAQs
Does completing Stripe Tax onboarding switch my shop from Avalara to Stripe Tax?

Where can I manage Stripe Tax settings?

Can I update a product's Stripe tax code after onboarding?
Yes. You can update the tax code from the product's edit page or use bulk actions in the product grid.
