Learn how CommentSold coupons work, including free shipping, percentage and flat-amount discounts, BOGO offers, and customer-specific coupon behavior and restrictions.
Use this article to understand how different coupon types apply discounts, which products qualify, and how customer-specific coupons work. Percentage and flat-amount coupons can apply discounts to an entire order, every qualifying item, or one eligible item, depending on the coupon's settings.

Free Shipping Coupons
Expected Behavior
- Applies as a general discount to the entire order.
- If an item or collection is excluded from a free shipping coupon, but the customer has other eligible items in their cart, the coupon will still apply.
- If an excluded item is the only item in the customer's cart, the coupon will not apply.
- Does not apply to Gift Cards.Cannot be combined with other coupon offers.
Percentage Off, Flat Amount Off
Expected Behavior
Discounts apply only to eligible cart items.
You can calculate discounts using Current Price or Original Retail Price.
Existing targeting and eligibility rules still apply, including product, collection, VIP, channel, and minimum purchase requirements.
Coupons are not automatically sent to customers. Shops must advertise or share the code.
Coupons do not apply to Gift Cards.
BOGO
Expected Behavior
- Discounts the cheapest items applicable.
- For example, if a customer purchases two items that meet the BOGO requirements and the prices are $15 and $10, the customer receives the discount on the $10 item.
- Only applies to items in the cart that meet the requirements.
- Customers can have other items in their cart that do not qualify without affecting the discount.
- Does not apply to Gift Cards.Does not send automatically to customers. Shops need to advertise the code.
- Does not support the Off One Item discount setting, which is available only for Percentage and Flat Amount coupons.
Customer Specific Coupons
Expected Behavior
- Only applies to customers selected when the coupon is created.
- The base coupon code and its details appear in the Coupons tab.
- A Download icon appears next to the coupon in the Coupons tab, allowing you to download a list of the customers assigned to the coupon.
- The Notify Customers by Email checkbox is unchecked by default.
- Customers cannot be added to the coupon after it has been created.
- Does not apply to Gift Cards.
