Barcodes store important information and make retrieving that information easy. For example, you can scan a barcode for an inventory item and view data like the item description, current quantity, wholesale price, retail price, and more.

Location barcodes contain data for specific locations in your warehouse such as a bin, a row, a rack, or more. When you are processing new inventory during the intake process, you can scan a location barcode and have that location added to the item's record.

This helps your fulfillment team quickly locate purchased items within your warehouse. You can also scan and change an inventory item's location if you are consolidating products into one location or rearranging your warehouse.

How Location Barcodes Benefit Your Shop

  • Scanning location changes saves your team significant time.
  • Easily consolidate remaining variants of an item into one location.
  • Access and view location history for an item.

Choose Your Change Location Mode

Before you get started scanning inventory items and assigning them to new locations, you'll want to select your mode. This will tell CommentSold what items you'll be moving (a single variant vs. an entire product SKU) and if you'll be moving it to a single location or multiple locations.

We recommend you always double-check the mode before you start scanning. This setting is not user-specific, meaning if another member of your team has changed the mode during a previous scanning section, then it will be changed for your upcoming session.

  1. Select Inventory Logs in the side menu of your CommentSold dashboard.
  2. Select Change Product Location in the menu at the top of the page.
  3. Select Mode in the top-right corner of the page, then select the options you need:
    • Single Variant. Select this option if you will be moving single variants of one (or more) products (e.g., only the gold hoop earrings, only the vanilla candle, etc.).
    • All Variants. Select this option if you will be moving all variants of a product. You can think of this as scanning an entire SKU.
      • Note: There is no way to scan a few variants of a product. You would need to select the Single Variant option if you wish to move two or more variants of a product.
    • Single Location. Select this option if you will be moving the variant or product (all variants) to a single location (e.g., a single bin, rack, etc.).
    • Multiple Locations. Select this option if you will be distributing a single variant or product (all variants) across multiple locations (e.g., multiple bins, racks, etc.).
  4.  Once you've selected your options, select Save.

Change Variant or Product to Single Location

Changing the location of a variant or product to a single location involves two steps: scanning the variant or product barcode and scanning the new location barcode.

Step 1: Scan Variant/Product Step 2: Scan Location

  1. Scan the barcode for the product whose location you wish to change.
    • If changing the location of a single variant, scan the barcode for the specific variant (size, color, etc.).
    • If changing the location of an entire product (all variants), simply scan any variant for the product.
  2. Review details:
    • Confirm that the scanned barcode pulled up information for the correct Scanned Variant or Scanned Product.
    • Confirm your Shelf Count. This is the number of units you'll be physically relocating.
    • Review the Current Location(s).
    • Review Product Notes if any.
    • Confirm Mode. If you need to change your mode, select Select Mode in the top-right corner of the page.

Change Variant or Product to Multiple Locations

When you first stock a product, or if you're restocking one of your most popular products, you could be juggling a large number of units either in single or multiple variants. Because of this, you might consider distributing a variant or product (all variants) across multiple locations (e.g., multiple bins, racks, etc.).

This process has two steps: scanning the variant or product barcode and scanning the new location barcodes.

Step 1: Scan Variant/Product Step 2: Scan Locations

Troubleshooting Issues

Expand this section to know about the common errors and how to troubleshoot them.

Having trouble?

Here are some common questions and resolutions.

  • Scanning a product barcode doesn’t update the screen in Inventory Quick Update or Change Inventory Location?
    • Make sure the barcode was printed from CommentSold.
    • If synced from Square or Shopify, check that the Custom Barcode field is correctly populated in Product details.
    • Confirm the label size is 3x1 or larger.
    • Test by scanning in the Product tab search or Fulfillment tab.
    • If the scanner beeps but nothing updates, reprint the label.
    • If the scanner does not beep, it’s a scanner issue.
    • If only some barcodes won’t scan, reprint those labels and try again.
  • Scanning a location barcode doesn’t update the screen?
    • If product barcodes scan but location barcodes don’t, try generating a shorter location code (e.g., A1).
    • If no location barcodes scan:
      • Confirm the label size is 3x1 or larger.
      • Confirm the barcode type is Code 128 compatible.
    • If only one specific location barcode won’t scan:
      • Check that the label is legible (not faded, blurry, or torn).
      • Reprint the barcode and scan again.
